1889 04 29 Took charge of the Boys & Girls as a Mixed School. (signed) J Nightingale
1889 05 03 This week the Girls' and Infants' Schools have been connected by a door; the Boys have removed across and the Infants and are now occupying the School formerly occupied by the Boys.
1889 05 06 Having looked into the work of the upper standards during last week, and examined them on paper today I find that the Girls have done very little indeed of their work during the past six months. Standard IV cannot do Long Division of Money. In Standard V about 5 girls could work 1 Practice sum right out of 3 while the remainder made a very poor attempt. In the same standard 3 boys failed to work 2 sums correctly out of 3 sums set. Standard VI cannot work Vulgar Fractions, while the single Standard VII has not learnt a single new rule since the last examination in November. A considerable number of girls, it seems, have spent all their time in knitting instead of ordinary lessons. Composition and Writing are almost as bad as the Arithmetic.
1889 05 10 I find that the female pupil teachers are fairly well up in their lessons, though they are a little weak in Arithmetic, not in getting correct answers but in methods of working and management. During this week I have been giving Black-board lessons in Practice to Standard V girls. The Rev H L Cook visited the school yesterday.
1889 05 17 This week I have given Black-board lessons in Decimals to Standard VI girls. Standard IV girls have made considerable progress in their work during the past fortnight.
1889 05 24 The workmen have commenced the alterations this week. The school work has gone on as well as possible under the circumstances.
1889 05 27 The Revd H L Cook visited the school this morning.
1889 05 30 This morning being Ascension Day, the scholars attended a Children's Service in the Church at 8.30 am. We reached school at 9.30. Gave the school holiday this afternoon.
1889 05 31 This week I have given Blackboard lessons to Standard I in Addition of Fractions.
1889 06 06 The Revd H L Cook visited the school to-day.
1889 06 07 Dismissed the school at 12 o'clock for the Whitsuntide Holidays.
1889 06 17 Re-opened the school after the Holidays. The Revd H L Cook visited the school.
1889 06 22 The attendance this week has been fair, but not so good as it should be. The work is going on fairly well. I have given Blackboard lessons to Standard V in 'Proportion' this week.
1889 06 25 Geo S Carr Esq, Inspector for the Church of England Schools Society, examined the whole school to-day in Reading, Writing & Arithmetic.
1889 07 02 Examined the Registers (signed) H L Cook
1889 07 05 Thos J Howell, Assistant Master, absent from school this week attending the Scholarship Examination. Rachel A Binns, Monitor, absent from lessons on Tuesday morning without permission. The average attendance of the scholars this week is as follows: Boys 148.6, Girls 130.2. Total 178.8. This is considerably less than it should be. The Girls attend rather worse than the Boys.
1889 07 12 I was absent from school on Wednesday sick.
1889 07 15 I have given Rachel Binns permission to stay at home during this week as her aunt is very ill.
1889 07 19 The Scripture Examination was held this day.
1889 07 26 The attendance is very poor at present, as there is a deal of sickness about. This afternoon the children had their Annual Treat. We walked up to Royds Hall but, owing to the heavy rain we could not enter the field. We returned to school and had tea and buns.
1889 08 01 Closed the school at 12 o'clock for the Midsummer Holidays. I resigned charge of this school. (signed) John Nightingale
1889 08 26 I took charge of the school this morning. Found everything very clean and tidy. Children turned up very well after the holidays very few being absent. Have considered to take sewing on Tuesdays, commencing after the marking of the Registers in the morning and going on for the remainder of the day. This will necessitate only a slight change in the other lessons of the day. (signed) C Thornton. Also received the Scripture report on the above date. Out of 16 marks 9 were Excellent and 7 Good.
1889 08 28 Two boys Willie Reade and Robert Sutcliffe entered school about two minutes after the registers were marked. I allowed the Teacher to mark them present.
1889 08 29 Upon looking at the Time Table I find that there is only half an hour per week allowed for singing. In future I shall take an hour for that subject and the Lessons generally taken between 2.40 and 3.20 will be omitted and Repetition taken a Lesson earlier.
1889 09 02 Examined Standard VI in the three Rs. Found them very weak in Arithmetic and particularly the girls. The last mentioned also read without much expression and are able to answer very little on the subject matter of what they read.
1889 09 06 The Rev H L Cook visited the school this morning.
1889 09 13 The attendance for this week has been fairly good and the work seems to be going on in a satisfactory manner. Have discovered that there are a number of children in Standard I whom it will be impossible to present for examination on the annual visit of HMI as it would be unwise to push them as they are extremely dull.
1889 09 20 Gave an Examination this morning to Standards III & IV in Writing & Arithmetic. The result was as follows: 44 present in St III 24 passed in Writing, 32 in Arithmetic percentage of passes = 64. 61 were present in St IV, of these 47 passed in Arithmetic & 44 in Writing. Percentage of passes = 75. Many of the errors in both Standards were due to carelessness.
1889 09 26 George S Carr Esq, Inspector for the Church of England's Schools' Society examined the school to-day in Reading, Writing & Arithmetic. From what I have already seen of the work done, the errors arise not so much from inability as from a want of care.
1889 09 27 The attendance for this week has slightly decreased when compared with that of last week. This is owing partly to sickness of children in the lower Standards.
1889 09 30 School was visited this morning by the Rev H L Cook and Rev M Humble. Also received Forms VIII & IX and examination schedules this morning.
1889 10 01 Have given Louisa Hodgson (3rd Year PT) permission to be absent from school this afternoon and to-morrow morning in order to assist at the exam of the school of her sister who is ill.
1889 10 04 Examined the Registers (signed) H L Cook
1889 10 04 Examined Standards II, III, IV & V in Writing and Arithmetic. Standards II and V did very well in both subjects and the other Standards fairly well. Spelling seems rather weak in Standard IV. Mr T G Rooper HMI paid a surprise visit to the school this afternoon. All the lessons were going on according to Time Table.
1889 10 07 Very poor attendance this morning owing partly to wet weather and partly to a local fair.
1889 10 08 Received Mr Carr's report on the examination which took place on Septr 26th. The spelling of Standards III & IV is very weak as is also the Arithmetic of V & VI. Composition of VI is very poor. Standard II is the only Standard which passed a really good examination. Reading seems to have been done very well by all the Standards. Compared with last year the school does not seem to have done quite so well.
1889 10 11 The average attendance for this week is considerably lower than last week owing to the very poor attendance last Monday.
1889 10 14 Admitted one boy this morning and from questioning him I find he has not been attending school for three or four months ' gives no reason for this non-attendance. Received 9/2 this morning from Mr Priestley being fees paid by Guardians for certain children for quarter ending September 27th.
1889 10 18 The Rev H L Cook visited the school to-day. Received notice on Tuesday that the Government Examination will be held on the 13th, 14th, 15th of November.
1889 10 21 Had occasion to punish three boys ' Albert Brown, Willie Sugden & John Kneeshaw for truanting.
1889 10 22 This morning the Rev H L Cook and Rev M Humble visited the school.
1889 10 25 Examined Standards II, III, IV, V & VI this morning. The first two Standards did very well indeed and St IV seems to have improved somewhat both in Spelling and Arithmetic since I examined them a fortnight ago. Standards V & VI are still very weak in Arithmetic particularly the girls in both Standards. The Composition is very fair throughout.
1889 10 29 Have had to speak very frequently to Sarah Holdsworth and Louisa Hodgson the Third Year PTs about being at School in good time both morning and afternoon. This afternoon they came in after children were assembled and offered no explanation whatever.
1889 10 30 Have excused Rachel Ann Binns from attending lessons in the mornings this week.
1889 10 31 End of school year. The children seem to have made good progress during the last few weeks and with care should do very well on the Inspector's visit. Composition is still weak in the upper Division.
1889 11 05 Several children who are on the Exam Schedules are absent from school this week owing to illness. Mr Howell took boys of St V & VI in Singing from 3.15 to 4.15 this afternoon.
1889 11 08 Held the usual examination this morning. On the whole the children did very well. Several children have had to be sent home owing to sickness during the last few days. Many of them will be prevented from attending the examination on account of this.
1889 11 11 The Rev H L Cook & Rev M Humble visited the school this morning and examined the children placed on the schedule for exceptional treatment.
1889 11 12 List of Songs: Standards I & II (1) Blackberrying (2) Washing Day (3) Sleighing Song (4) Maying (5) Who'll buy my posies (Round); Standard III (1) Awake & Hail the Morn (2) Birthplace (3) Home of Glory (4) Bay of Biscay (5) Who'll buy my posies/Labour's strong & merry (Rounds); Standards IV, V & VI (1) Awake & Hail the Morn (2) Birthplace (3) Home of Glory (4) Spring Life (5) Who'll buy my posies/Labour's strong & merry
1889 11 13/14/15 School examined by T G Rooper Esq HMI assisted by Mr Watkins HMIA. Everything passed off satisfactorily. School closed on Friday afternoon.
1889 11 19 Sent Sarah E Holdsworth home this morning for being twenty minutes late to lessons & having no excuse for this irregularity. She has not returned to school to-day. Received the examination schedules back this morning. The school has passed about 83 pc. The cause of this low percentage may be ascribed to Standard IV which has done very badly indeed.
1889 11 20 Miss Varndell is absent from school to-day by permission. S E Holdsworth is also absent without permission.
1889 11 21 Closed school this afternoon in good time. Am giving the children holiday to-morrow (Friday).
1889 11 25 Admitted 24 Boys and 13 Girls from the Infants' School this morning. The Standards are now formed for next year and the Teachers have begun their respective work for the year.
1889 11 26 Four children have been admitted this morning. Owing to a slight fall of snow the attendance is not so good as it ought to be.
1889 11 28 The Pupil Teachers have been much more punctual in coming to lessons in the morning during the past week than I have known them before. Their lessons are however not prepared as well as I could wish, in fact, in many cases they show that they have either been hurried over or never looked at, in the least.
1889 12 02 The Rev H L Cook visited the school this morning ' admitted several new scholars. Miss R Varndell will be absent from school for the next fortnight as she intends sitting for the Certif Exam next week. George Woodhead is absent from school this morning, the cause is sickness I believe but have received no intimation of it.
1889 12 05 George Woodhead is still absent and I have not as yet been acquainted with the cause of absence. School work is going on smoothly notwithstanding the absence of two of the staff.
1889 12 09 I have been absent from school since Thursday morning owing to a case of serious illness at home. Returned & opened school this afternoon. During my absence Miss Seed has taken charge and the work has gone on without interruption. Mr Howell sent a note to school this morning saying that he was unable to attend owing to indisposition. George Woodhead is still off.
1889 12 10 Sarah E Holdsworth was half an hour late in coming to lessons this morning. Mr Howell has returned to his duties.
1889 12 13 The attendance in the lower Standards (I & II) is not very satisfactory but this can partly be accounted for by the fact that there is much sickness in the neighbourhood.
1889 12 16 All the Staff are present this morning. George Woodhead is better.
1889 12 18 The Report on the Examination held on Nover 13th, 14th & 15th was brought to School by the Rev H L Cook this morning. It is a very poor one there being no good points in it. This is due I think to the 'Mixed' School having been recently formed, and to frequent changes in the Staff.
1889 12 19 School dismissed this afternoon for Xmas Holidays. The Rev H L Cook was present and presented prizes for good attendance and also Certificates of Merit to those who had passed in two or more subjects at the annual examination.
1890 01 06 I took charge of this school this morning. Found school clean and tidy and the majority of the children were very neat. I admitted 12 children this morning and afternoon. (signed ) Walter Smith
1890 01 07 The Rev H L Cook and Rev J F Phillips visited the school this morning. Admitted one new boy this morning. On account of all the female teachers being engaged with the sewing with the exception of L Hodgson I arranged for Standards I and II to take the same lessons while sewing is being taken. Copy of Report The children have passed a barely fair examination in the Elementary subjects. Whilst the mechanical work is fairly well done in some classes, that requiring thought is a failure. Efforts should be made to improve the intelligence of the children, who seem to have become quite habituated to a state of mental inactivity. The Music Grant is recommended with hesitation on account of the weakness of the ear exercises. The extreme weakness in Grammar in the fourth standard, and the inability to grasp the poems recited in the second, third and fourth standards imperilled even the lower mark for English. The Geography barely deserves the lower Grant. Needlework is fair. The rearrangement of the school, and the change of Teachers have interfered with the progress of the children this year, but the newly-formed Mixed Department will probably prove successful when it is thoroughly established. Staff for the year Walter Smith Head-master, Annie Seed Mistress, Thomas J Howell Assistant-master, Rachel Varndell Assistant-mistress, Sarah E Holdsworth Fourth year PT, Louisa Hodgson Fourth year PT, George Woodhead Third year PT, Rachel A Binns Second year PT (signed) H L Cook Correspondent

1890 01 15 Miss Varndell returned to her duties this morning. The Pupil Teachers do not prepare their lessons thoroughly. They seem to be content with a vague idea of the subjects taken in hand. Rachel A Binns seems to be very backward in her work.
1890 01 17 Heard L Hodgson, S Holdsworth and G Woodhead give criticism lessons this morning. From the manner in which they were given it is evident they have had little practice in this branch of school-work.

Report 1894 The elementary subjects of this school are generally of a highly satisfactory character, and all the paper work is unusually neat ' that of the fourth standard deserving special mention. Handwriting is uniformly good and Composition and written Arithmetic are on the whole creditable. The following points need improvement: oral arithmetic and rapid addition in the fifth and sixth standards, concrete arithmetic in the second, written Arithmetic in the sixth and intelligence in the reading of the upper standards. Of the class subjects, Elementary Science has been successfully taught throughout. Geography is good in the second and third standards and very fair in the first, fifth and sixth standards. The girls of the fourth, fifth and sixth standards are distinctly weak in this subject. The discipline is fairly good. It would be a good plan one day to build another classroom over the present juniors' room which might then provide accommodation for Cookery and Manual Training. The small classrooms would make convenient cloak rooms. (signed) Edwin Davis Correspondent

1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 1.
A LOWMOOR SCHOOLBOY'S DEATH - KICKED WHILE AT PLAY
A young schoolboy named Harry Lee, the son of John Lee, of School-street, Lowmoor, died somewhat suddenly on Monday, under circumstances which gave rise to various wild rumours in the district. The boy attended Carr-lane day school, and was, it appears, kicked in the abdomen by another boy while at play in the schoolyard last Friday afternoon. On Sunday night, Dr Robinson was asked to call in and see him whilst making his rounds on Monday, but when the doctor arrived at the house the boy was dead. An inquest was held on the body on Wednesday afternoon in the Oxley-place schoolroom, before Mr J G Hutchinson, City Coroner, and a jury of whom Mr J Borrow was elected foreman. The inquiry was attended by Detective-Inspector Talbot, of the Bradford police, Inspector Davis, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, by Mr Walter Smith, headmaster of the Carr-lane school, and by a boy named David Myers and his father.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 2.
John Lee, woolcomber, of 44, School-street, Lowmoor, said deceased was his son, and was eleven years old. On Friday noon (he continued), he came home from school, and complained of a pain at the bottom of his abdomen and on one leg. He said a boy had kicked him. I was not at home, but he told me this in the evening. He appeared to be all right in the evening and all right on Saturday. When he got up on Sunday morning he again complained of the pain, but at night he appeared all right and went to bed with the other boy. At eleven o'clock I thought he was uncomfortable, and went to look at him. He was awake. I re-arranged him on his pillow and left him. Perhaps half-an-hour afterwards I heard him moaning. I went to him again. He said his pain was worse, and I made up a fire downstairs and fetched him down, wrapped in a shawl. I then remained with him up to about 7.30, and the pain continued 'on and off'. He died quietly about ten minutes to twelve on Monday noon. I went for the doctor about eight o'clock on Sunday night, and he said he would call the following morning (Monday) during his rounds. When the doctor arrived he was dead.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 3.
Did he ever tell you who had kicked him? He has mentioned the name, but I am sure I cannot tell who it was. He has had a lump on the left side of his neck for eight or nine weeks past, and has been quieter than usual.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 4.
Mary Lee said: Deceased was my step-son, I saw him when he came home from school on Friday. He complained of a pain in his stomach, and said, a boy at school had kicked him, but did not give his name, and did not say whether it was in play or they had been fighting. He never mentioned the boy's name to me, and I did not attach much importance to it. He appeared all right on Saturday, but got worse on Sunday. He had a lump on his neck, but it had made no difference to his spirits. He had always been a quiet boy. He had never complained before of anyone interfering with him at school. He attended Carr-lane day school. He gave me to understand that it was during play-time he was kicked.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 5.
Leonard Mounsey (11), of Hill-top, said:- I attend Carr-lane school. Deceased attended the same school. I saw him kicked last Friday about ten minutes to twelve. We leave school at a quarter to twelve. He was going home. The whole of the children were running around. The boy who kicked him was David Myers. They were playing ' romping and pulling each other about. They were not fighting. Deceased was bending down, and while he was doing so, Myers in a playful way lifted up his foot and kicked him. Lee commenced to cry afterwards, and went home. I am sure Myers did not kick him for the purpose of hurting him.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 6.
Albert Dickenson (12) of 11 Fern Bank, another boy attending the Carr-lane school, said he knew Harry Lee. On Friday, about twelve o'clock noon, Lee was coming out of the school gates. David Myers was playing with him, and witness saw him kick him in the stomach. They were playing together. They were not fighting 'right'. Lee cried after he was kicked.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 7.
Emily Hall, of 11, Railway-terrace, Lowmoor, a teacher at the school, said that on Friday morning the deceased did not take part in any of the lessons. He complained of pain in his head and appeared ill. He did his work all right on Friday afternoon. He did not complain of any pain in his body on Friday.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 8.
Dr A H Robinson said: I was sent for, and when I got to the house about 12.30 on Monday, he was dead. His father came with the message, but said it was not at all urgent. I have to-day examined the body of the deceased. Externally, I noticed the body was poorly nourished. There was a large swelling on the left side of the neck, just under the ear, occupying nearly the whole side of the neck. There was discolouration in the lower part of the body on the right side. Externally, there was nothing further. On opening the abdomen, a quantity of blood-stained serum oozed out. On examining the bowels there was extensive tubercular diseased glands under the stomach. There was also evident signs of tubercular peritonitis. In addition, there were two well-marked patches of gangrenous bowel, and in one instance a recent perforation. The perforation, I think, arose from the gangrene. In my opinion, death was due to perforation of the bowels from the gangrenous inflammation.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 9.
Do you think this gangrenous inflammation arose from natural causes, or might it have arisen from some external violence, or pressure? My impression is that it must have been from some external injury, which might have been very slight. He has evidently had peritonitis some months, and a slight injury on such a weak, tubercular constitution might have been serious.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 10.
The Coroner, in his summing up, said so many rumours had got abroad about this case that a full investigation was called for. The doctor's opinion was that death was due to perforation of the bowel due to gangrene, arising from some external injury, and that very little pressure or injury would cause what he found when the condition of the boy was taken into account. Whilst gambolling about with other boys, deceased had received a kick from Myers, and complained of a pain afterwards. He thought the jury would have little hesitation in coming to the conclusion that the external injury the doctor spoke of had been caused by the kick from Myers, but if they thought that the kick had been given in a playful manner, and not wilfully, they would have no alternative but to conclude that the case was an accident.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 11.
The Foreman (to the Doctor): Did he die from natural causes? Dr Robinson: There is no doubt he died from gangrene of the bowel and perforation. That is a natural cause of death.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 6.
The coroner: But from what you found, and the evidence you have heard, your opinion is that this gangrene and perforation were set up by some external injury? Dr Robinson: Oh, yes. He died a natural death, but the cause was perhaps immaterial. Any slight injury of such a constitution and under such conditions might be very serious ' as it has been no doubt.
1903 05 13 Newspaper Cutting Text Part 6.
A Juryman: How long had the gangrene been there? Dr Robinson: About three days. After a short consultation, the jury agreed upon a verdict of 'Died from perforation of the bowels due to gangrene, arising from having been accidentally kicked while at play on the 8th day of May instant.'

1906 10 17 On the suggestion of HMI, J H Wylie Esq, I have made the following rearrangement of Time Table for Tuesday afternoon: Old Style 2 to 2.34 Reading, 2.35 to 2.45 Music or Drawing, 2.45 to 3.20 Spelling or Dictation, 3.20 to 3.30 Recreation, 3.30 to 4 Geography, 4 to 4.30 Science. This causes two oral lessons to follow one another after Recreation, and Science is scarcely suitable to conclude a day's work with. Hence I propose to substitute the following: 2 to 2.30 Science, 2.30 to 2.40 Music or Drill, 2.40 to 3.15 Reading, 3.15 to 3.25 Recreation, 3.25 to 4 Dictation or Spelling, 4 to 4.30 Geography.
