Child Employment Commission, 1841:: Jonas Wood

No. 17.- Jonas Wood, 17 years old:-

Went into pit at seven years old. It is hard work being in a pit at some places. Can recollect when he first went in; went with his brother; did not think mich about it. Could always do the work they set him; liked it a bit at first, but no so long, because it was harder work at after. Has always had good health, except an inflammation for fifteen weeks. Has been at Sunday-school; can read not so well; cannot write. When he lakes, sits opposite the house, and goes about and helps his mother. Washes himself clean when he goes home at night always. Has not always enough to eat, because some of the family are out of work. Sometimes goes to church. Has no Sunday clothes.
