1 Introduction Continued from missing page...in Bradford. Preached about 11,000 times, Baptised between 6 & 700. Educated for the Christian Ministry nearly 160 candidates. Officiated at more than 100 ordinations, in all with only 5 or 6 exceptions giving the charge, And attended 40 opening of Chapels. Well might he affirm with adoring gratitud e while in the act of laying aside his martial abiliments and warlike furniture. I have fought the good fight &c &c (MT's note - don't know who he is meaning - might be someone locally famous minister who has died? Think it could be Rev William Steadman of Westgate Baptists)

11 May 4th 1838 On Friday as he was returning from Otley Market James Harrison lost his life by falling of his Cart and was run over his body by the wheel of another cart, he lived till he got home & then died aged 70 years. He was intered according to his own request by the side of John Murgatroyd at the Wesley Methodist Chapel Allerton Lee on Wednesday the 9th of May an Inquest was held over the body on the 8th inst at the house of John Hammond Craven Heifer Inn Four Lane Ends Verdict Accidental Death.    
12 May 22nd 1838 Died Mr Edward Berwick of Cottingley aged 61 years.    
13 June 6th 1838 Died on Wednesday at Little Horton my Uncle John Bairstow aged 77 years. He was intered on Monday the 11th at Westgate Chapel he was the oldest member liveing belonging to that society; He was the first man baptised by the late Dr Steadman Mr Wilson gave to drinking at the temperance Hall to the persons attending the funeral gratuitiously. He was baptised in the beck runing near the cow shed in the holme now occupied by Mr Wm Sugden Butcher bottom of Silsbridge Lane Bradford. John Bairstow Uncle
14 June 16th 1838 On Saturday afternoon 5 o'clock died at Scarborough my Uncle Joseph Hammond my Fathers twin Brother, he served years in the East York local Malitia surgeant & adjutant in the 5th North York Malitia. He came of with a pension of 4/-d per day. He was 50 years in his Majestys service. He was intered on Thursday the 21st at the Parish Church at Scarborough aged 69 years. 22 Jan 17th 1839 Died the Rev Henry Heap Vicar of Bradford he had been vicar 21 years he was intered in the middle isle in the Parish Church. The road leading from his house to the Church was crowded with spectators aged 49 years. His daughter Maria died the same day and was intered with her Father aged 7 years.

28 May 3rd 1839 Died on Friday near 2 o'clock in the afternoon my Venerable Father. He was intered on Wednesday the 8th in the Baptist Chapel Westgate Bradford in his own family grave aged 70 years & 6 months. No name Father
29 May 29th 1839 Died James Greenwood of Brick Lane he was the oldest member belonging to Baptist Church Bradford he lived under 3 pastors viz the Rev Wm Crabtree Dr Steadman and the Rev H Dowson aged 74 years.

53 October 1st 1840 On Thursday Morning at 7 o'clock John Kitchen Greenwood of Flappet nr Cullingworth he was going to Wibsey Bank Foot with a cart when near the Blacksmith Shop at Four Lane Ends the Horse took fright and run away he kept fast hold of its lead till it got on to the highway when he fell down and the cart passed over his body he jumped up and catched hold of the Horse head for the Cart had thrown over when he instantly fell back and in a few minutes he expired Aged 27 years an inquest was held over the body on Friday verdict accidental death.    
54 Oct 13th 1840 Died on Tuesday Mary Waugh wife of John Waugh of Thiefs ford Lane aged 64 years.    
55 Oct 29th 1840 On Thursday night John & Jessie Baldwin of Daisy Hill top lost their lives by falling into a Quarry at Heaton back lane belonging to Mr Milnes. They both worked at the above Quarry and on the afertnoon of the day, the weather was very wet, so they could not work; they spent the afternoon in the Cabin drinking and about eight o'clock they prepared to go home, their way being along the edge of the Quarry, which was about 20 yds deep, the night was extremely dark, and just leaveing the light in the Cabin they was so bewilder'd that they fell in. the rest of the men in the Cabin knew nothing of the accident till the next morning, when going to their work they found them lying in the bottom of the Quarry quite dead, and which they had no doubt but that they died instantly. John was about 30 years old, and has left a wife and four children. Jessie was about 19 years old, and was a single man, of very quiet industrious and sober habits, and was much respected and of course much lamented. They was taken to the Kings Head Inn, when an Inquest was held on the bodies on Monday Nov 2nd. Verdict Accidental Death.

58 Nov 19th 1840 Died Nathan Driver Thornton Mill Wagggoner he was jumping of the Waggon Shafts when he fell under the Wheels of the Waggon when they run over his head he died instantly at the top of the Bridge crossing the River at Kirstall Aged    
59 Dec 7th 1840 Died Dan Mortimer Banksman of 4 Lane Ends Aged 53 years.    
60 Dec 7th 1840 Mary Crowther of Denbeigh in Allerton late of Heaton Widow of the late Robert Crowther of Heaton Aged 80 years.    
61 Jan 8th 1841 Died Wm Frankland of Maningham his death was ocasioned by jumping of the fore end of the Cart when he fell back and the Cart wheel passed over his head he died instantly opposite the Turf Tavern as he was returning from Otley market which he had been in the habit of attending for 33 years. Aged    
62 Jan 10th 1841 Died on Sunday Morning about 9 oclock Sarah Naylor Near Chellow Heaton She died in Child Bed, it is believed she was heart broken Aged 27 years.    
63   Intered on the 14th December 1840 in Upper Canada America Robert Frankland of the 56th Regiment formerly of Heaton. It is generaly supposed his death was occasioned with a sudden transision from heat to cold being marched direct from Jamaica to Canada in the 25th year of his age.

65 April 9th 1841 On Good Friday Morning died Isaac Wheater of Four Lane Ends formerly Farmer at the Waterside Farm Aged 75 years.    
66 April 12th 1841 On Easter Monday at 6 o'clock in the evening died Mr Joseph Hollings of Whetley Hill.    
67 April 16th 1841 Died on Friday Henry Knight of Bowling Lane Aged 24 years.    
68 April 26th 1841 Died on Tuesday Thos Barraclough of the Old Bishop Blaze Inn Aged 51 years.    
69 Sept 12th 1841 Died Charles Bradley of Shipley Aged 38 years on Monday.    
70 Sept 14th 1841 Died Joseph Bradley of Shipley Aged 30 years Wednesday. They was returning from Denton Park where they had been for a large oak tree weighing near 4 tons, when about 300 yds North of the Fleece Inn on the Otley and Shipley road, the linchpin of the fore Wheel broke, the Waggon was overturned and they was both rideing, Joseph upon the Waggon shafts, and was thrown to a considerable distance & was dreadfully mangled, he lingered till Wednesday & then died. Charles on the top of the Waggon, and was caught by the tree, there was a number of persons on the spot immediately, and though they made all haste they could, they was half an hour in removeing the tree, he cried out earnestly to the bystanders, to put him out of his misery and as soon as he was liberated he expired.

77 Feb 4th 1842 On Friday in Pit Lane Bradford died Mercy Drake Widow of the late Samuel Drake Smith & Farrier Shipley in the 102 year of age. She was a joined member of the Wesleyan Methodist Society for upwards of ?8 years (page torn) she had 14 children 50 Grand children & 60 Great Grand Children.    
78 Feb 8th 1842 On Tuesday in the River Ouse Near Acaster Near York was found drowned the body of Mr Garbutt Butler to E C Lister Esq he had lost his senses and attempted the murder of his Master for which he was sent to his Sister at York and having escaped her he was lost a week and at last found drowned. He bore a good character was very liberal to the poor he was a Class leader in the Methodist society and was remarkably pious.

80 Feb 9th 1842 Wednesday night Died Mary Frankland at her Daughters Mrs Beanland of Horton. She was an inhabitant of Heaton and was remarkably a stout healthy and laborious Woman. A good Mother and a very kind Grandmother aged 81 years.    
81 Feb 13th 1842 Sunday Died at Thief ford Bridge Wm Crabtree Mr Pillings Waggoner in the 26th year of his age.

84 April 10th 1842 Sunday Died John Greenwood of Heaton Better known as the Old Soldier or Lordy. He was born in an old cot where Heaton Chapel now stands and where he is now intered and after having done his Country service in almost all parts of the world he ended his career at the same place where he began Aged 72 years Being intered at the same spot where he was born.    
85 May 24th 1842 Sunday Died Benjm Greenwood of Shipley Moorhead as he was returning from Leeds with a Waggon load of Wool he was thrown under the Waggon Wheels & killed on the spot coming down Bradford Moor about 40 yds above the Oak Inn Aged    
86 July 18th 1842 Died Mr Saml Lum of Bradford Aged 36 years.    
87 August 18th 1842 Died On Thursday Alice Greenwood Wife of Thos Greenwood of Thiefsford Bridge. She had been more than 10 months confined to bed she was intered in Daisy Hill Chapel yard on Sunday the 21st aged 59 years. Died at the same time her son Joseph Greenwood at Ingateson (?) in Essex where he was working at a new Railway making. He was intered the Sunday following in Frying (?) Church yard followed by Mrs & Miss Bray his Masters wife and daughter and 8 young women to bear his Pall and a great number of his fellow workman the good minister improved his death on Sunday the 28th to a numerous congretation many of his fellow workmen evinced their respect and attachment by their tears. Aged 33 years.

92 Sept 23rd 1842 Died on Friday John Fawthrop Doctor of Thornton Aged 55 years. He was a man remarkably skilfull and succesful in his profession and was much respected by a large circle of friends, and especially by the poor to whom he was a real friend. His death will be much lamented; not only by his own family and in his own village, but also by the inhabitants of Bradford and its neighbourhood whom he has regularly met 3 times a week in his room behind the Pack Horse Inn for a great number of years. The funeral took place on Thursday the 29th. When upwards of 700 farmers and respectable gentlemen from the surrounding villages attended in order to show their last tribute of respect to the deceased. The whole of the road between his residence and the church was crowded with spectators many of whom might be seen to drop the tear of sorrow. He attended his business in good health on Saturday the 17th and begun to complain as he was returning home which proved an inflamation, which deprived him of his life and this country of its most usefull man.    
93 Nov 17th 1842 On Thursday the body of Joseph Holder of Lidget Green was found drowned in the new Dam belonging to Mr Rawson's Dyehouse he had been absent from home a fortnight and from the marks on his head and neck it was thought he had been murdered and thrown in Aged years.
