Royds Hall Manor Call Book of 1835

The Manor of Royds Hall was in the township of North Bierley and was for a considerable amount of time held by the Rookes family of Royds Hall. The last member of this family to hold the manor was called Edward Leeds. He had been born Edward Rookes but changed his name subsequent to his marriage to an heiress, Miss Mary Leedes of North Milford. After his death by suicide following his bankruptcy, the Manor was purchased in 1789 by a partnership which later traded as the Low Moor Company. They acted as Lord’s of the Manor until the area was enclosed in 1888

A Call Book was an attendance register for a manor court, listing the tenants who were required to attend. The Royds Hall document is in the form of loose pages. See sample page.

Some call books were updated year by year, with notes of tenants who had died or sold their land and the names of their successors. This document is dated 1835 but shows signs of being updated well into the 1850’s.
Some of the entries have faded and other entries have been written directly on top of them. There are lots of notes in the margin and many of them are abbreviations and very difficult to make out. We have tried our best to make sense of the entries, and advise you to look at the original in the Bradford Office of the West Yorkshire Archives reference 15D74/3/13/1c if in doubt.

Across the top of each page are columns headed : Freeholders, Residence, Description of Building, From whom purchased or descended, Occupiers, Observations

The page is ruled across between entries. Some are very short, just a line or two, others take up most of one page.

The transcription comes in two main parts which are related to each other. The Freeholders section and a List of Occupiers. Each entry in the Freeholders section has a record number and this number is also given in the Occupiers table to denote which Freeholder this occupier was noted against.

Note re addresses. The address given is that of the Freeholder and not the Occupier. It may be possible to locate the Freeholder and Occupier on the Poor Law Rate Book of 1839 . This will give you the occupiers address.

There are also three smaller tables which list Tenants to the Lord, Tenants to the New Estate, Tenants by Indenture and Long Leases

We are not sure what is meant by Tenants to the New Estate – it is probably land which was purchased by the Low Moor Company after it bought the ancient manor.
