New Road Side Wesleyan Day School:

New Road Side Infants School

A Day School was first built in 1860 in connection with the Wesleyan Sunday School and used as a preaching place. This was demolished and replaced with a chapel and Sunday School in 1871. This building was demolished in the 1960s

This Log Book commences in 1885 when the Infants School was recognised a separate department.

In the book's flyleaf it states
Dimensions
School Room length 44 breadth 21
Classrooms length 21 breadth 17

We assume these dimensions are given in feet.

Over the years covered by the Log Books average attendance ranges from the mid thirties to eighty pupils. No wonder the mistress continually complains.

166 1887 12 16 Received H.M.Is report, of which the following is a copy:
167 1887 12 16 Infants School: The Infants Dept is only in a fair state of efficiency, owing as in the case of the Mixed School, to the want of a proper staff. The average attendance for the last quarter was 94 & yet for nearly all that time the Mistress has been without any recognized help and the Babies Class, Class numbering 50 has been almost totally neglected.
168 1887 12 16 The elder children, with the exception of those over 7, have been exceedingly well taught in Reading, Writing & Spelling, but their knowledge of numbers is below fair. The Object Lessons have been effectively given in the first & second classes & these children have been as well employed as could be expected with so slight a staff. The classroom used by the Babies is very dark & is furnished only with high forms. These little ones should be under the charge of a qualified Assistant who would know how to develop their minds, & at the same time give them the frequent change of position & physical exercise so necessary to them. The closet provided two years ago for the Infants is closed again and they are now as formerly, misusing those of the boys in the mixed school.
169 1887 12 16 The staff of the infants school should be at once strengthened so as to meet the requirements of Article 83, which are not at present satisfied (Article 115(ii). ) My Lords regret that the state of S. Hirsts health renders it necessary to remove her name from the Register of Pupil Teachers serving in this School.
170 1887 12 16 Staff: Martha Brear Certificate 2nd. Ann Tordoff.
171 1887 12 22 Closed school for Christmas Holidays. Attendance very poor indeed, several children away ill from cold.
