Wyke Township Book 1781-1838

Wyke Township book 1781 to 1838 gives very brief minutes usually starting "Be it remembered that….", followed by lists of Constables, Overseers of the Poor, Highway Surveyors, Churchwardens, Collectors of Land Tax, etc. with their accounts.

Wyke was in the Parish of Birstall and did not become a Church District until 1844 and St Mary's was built in 1847. We do not know where the early meetings took place but a Committee Room is first mentioned in 1819 and this will probably be the School House built by public subscription in 1818. (It's now the Khyber House take-away next to the Robin Hood pub).

It is a very messy book; the entries often faded and difficult to understand. Some of the pages are numbered but others not. It has not been filled in chronologically and to complicate matters it has been repaired and some pages are no longer in the correct order. We have sorted the entries into date order.

Instead of transcribing in full, as we have with the later book, we have simply made a list of names which appear, together with any office held or comments made and in most cases we have tried to indicate the type of entry it is.

On a few occasions where the entry was particularly unusual we have transcribed the "minute" in full and these are marked thus **.

Some of the names are taken from signatures and spellings vary a great deal over the years, even for the same individual! We have given a list of surnames which appear, but you need to take into account some often surprising variations.

Certain householders were obliged to attend Township Meetings and take it in turn to hold office. Some individuals were happy to do this, but others were not so keen and in these records you will see people appointed as substitutes, usually after receiving a payment for doing so from the intended office holder.

118   1825 12 01 At a meeting of the Rated inhabitants of Wike holden at the school room there pursuant to public notice duly given and published the first December 1825. The Vicar of Birstall proposes that he will accept in lieu of his Easter Dues, Mortuaries, and Vicarial Tithes (except modus for Tithe Hay) within this township a sum equal to 1 shilling per family therein per annum provided the amount be raised and collected by means of the Church Rate and paid to him annually at Easter: the first payment to commence at Easter next. That the number shall be ascertained by the Parliamentary Census for the time being which at present gives for the Township of Wike 292 families. That fourteen guineas will be annually required until another Parliamentary Census be taken and him to be advanced or diminished according to each successive census. It is resolved that the sum required to be annually paid to the vicar as a commutation for the above mentioned Vicarial Tithes and Easter Dues and Mortuaries is considered to be very moderate and if paid according to the above proposal will be a mutual saving of trouble.
