Chapel Lane (Toad Lane) Presbyterian/Unitarian, Bradford :: Memorials

Memorial Inscriptions

The following transcription of the Memorial Inscriptions at Chapel Lane Presbyterian/Unitarian Chapel was compiled by J. B. Hewitt in 1938. He obviously carried out a lot of research on the Chapel and the stones. We have arranged the memorials alphabetically by surname. The grave numbers refer to the numbers on the plan. Arthur Blackburn visited the Chapel in August 1928 and recorded some inscriptions. We have made a note against the memorials which were also recorded by Blackburn, although his transcriptions are likely to be less accurate than those given here.

You can download a pdf file giving J.B.Hewitt’s Introduction to the transcription here

Surrounded in his early days by many difficulties; without property, expectation, guide or connexns, he received from the benefce. of some discerng. individals. an academical education. The road to Science thus opend. by generosy. he pursued with success; happily applied to practical purposes informn. resultg. from study, and gradually to extensive knowledge, reputation & affluence. But of wealth or of wordly advancemt. he was not solicitous. In the esteem of friends, acquired by the constant performance of kind offices; in the cheerful flow of affection in his family, excited by an uniform tenderness of deportment, in philosophical researches & in the habitual contemplatn. of the wonderful works of God; his calm & contented mind sought its highest gratificatn. Taught by experience as well as meditation the high importance of just moral views, his strongest desire was to extend the pure principles of the Christian Religion. Occupied many yrs. as a teacher of youth & a Minr. of the Gospel he strove in his school & in the pulpit, with energy, with eloquence, with effect, to impress these principles. Ceasing to preach he continued to recommd. them by his practice; his whole life exhibiting a pattern of the duties wh. that relign. enjoins. This stone marks the spot where are deposited his remns. The useful works he established. & promoted form his best mont., whilst the record of his virtues is engraven on the hearts of numbers comforted by his kindness, enlightened by his instruction, improved by his example.
