Zion Congregationalist Church, Wibsey: Various

Following the closure in 1985, the church and Sunday School were demolished and the stone memorials in the graveyard were sold to a private contractor.  Before they were removed the late Irene J Wilson and Margaret Kirkcaldy made a detailed study of the monuments and copies were made of the inscriptions and drawings made of the monuments.  This was a mammoth task, undertaken in all weathers with a short deadline before the stones were removed.  We are indebted to them - without their work these details would have been lost.

The drawings and various details were compiled into books which were deposited at the Bradford Offices of the West Yorkshire Archives and also in the Local Studies Library.  If you wish to see drawings of the grave stones and monuments, or the full inscriptions you must consult these books. (Blackburn only covers those up to 1929)

We have made transcriptions of their typed lists from the above books which also covered various grave and receipt books, plus listings of various categories of grave inscriptions.  On comparing their lists to Blackburn's Inscriptions and the burial registers various discrepancies have been found between them, but no attempt has been made by us to find out which version is correct.  We present these lists "as written" and hope you will find them useful.

Note: Most graves were purchased by families and held up to six burials. "Smalls" were graves where ground rock prevented using the full depth and they were usually sold to single people or those without a family and they often held unrelated people.

The tables below cover the following items:

  • A set of collectors accounts dated 1851, possibly towards a Sunday School which was added in 1863, but at the end of the pages it says "Some of the books were not brt in and some payments may not be marked in this book"
  • Unnumbered Receipts: usually for costs arising from a funeral, organ use, food etc
  • Marker stones: usually placed on a plot to proclaim ownership or identify position
  • Miscellaneous Inscriptions: usually relating to infant deaths
  • Buried Elsewhere: those mentioned on monuments or records but not interred
  • No Burial: usually those mentioned on monuments but died overseas
  • Infants: a few infant burial records
